Disaster Preparedness and response – Prabhat NGO Rayagada

Disaster Preparedness and response

The frequency and severity of natural disasters have been increasing, climate change being one of the reasons along with other factors like deforestation, chemical pollutants and over use of natural resources. While natural disasters are devastating for anyone who experiences them, the rural poor are the most vulnerable, due to their poverty, lack of awareness and coping mechanisms. In such context communities need to be prepared to withstand, the disasters and Risk-reduction initiatives should be in place that can protect livelihoods and lives in the event of natural disaster.

  • PRABHAT has intervened for disaster preparedness and reducing disaster risks through empowering communities to access institutional and technical resources and respond to emergencies whenever they arise.
  • PRABHAT has been actively carrying out activities at community level on disaster risk management that includes preparation of community level disaster management plan, training to disaster management task force members, demonstrations, and formation of disaster management committees. During the year, we are preparing Village Disaster Management Plans (VDMPs) for 72 villages of Chandrapur, Ramnaguda and Gudari Blocks in Rayagada district of Odisha with support from District Disaster Management Agency, Rayagada

Relief Works on Epidemics

The COVID-19 Pandemic has become the most defining global humanitarian challenge of all times, triggering a deep economic crisis. As the corona virus is affecting the daily lives of people and hampering economic activities in many countries, India is nowhere behind to get affected by this pandemic.

With the Government of India having announced a 21-day countrywide lockdown starting 25th March 2020, to contain the significant public health challenge that the COVID-19 pandemic poses. We are aware that it is significantly affecting the lives of many, especially the poorest and the most vulnerable communities with whom we work and still is extended up to 3rd May 2020.

  • We received onetime assistance from Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives, to serve poor, vulnerable communities during the lockdown. We had distributed dry ration i.e. 2 Kg Dal, 2 Kg Poha, 1 iodized Salt packet, Cooking Oil of 2 Liters, 1 Kg Sugar, 4 Kg Potato, 2 Kg Onions and 4 Lifebuoy hand wash soaps to 1200 Households in Dangasorda and Turiguda Gram Panchayats of Chandrapur block in Rayagada district of Odisha.
